(This article expired 31.03.2021.)

During an online video conference on June 23, 2020, three Czech Deputy Ministers and one Egyptian discussed the current topics of Czech-Egyptian relations with an emphasis on economic cooperation and regional security.

Deputy Minister for Non-European Countries Martin Tlapa, Deputy Minister for the European Countries Aleš Chmelař, and Deputy Minister for the Security and Multilateral Issues Martin Povejšil discussed current Czech-Egyptian relations with their Egyptian counterpart, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Badr Abdelatta.

The consultations focused especially on bilateral issues. The deputies praised the good level of the Czech-Egyptian relationship, and recalled that in 2022 the two countries will celebrate a hundred years anniversary since the establishment of mutual relations. They also discussed the preparation of the visit of Egyptian President Sisi to the Czech Republic, and agreed on cooperation in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The Czech Republic and Egypt are ready to exchange best practices in this respect.

Egypt's cooperation with the EU and NATO, the Czech Republic's participation in the MFO mission in the Sinai Peninsula, and regional security issues were also on the agenda. Egypt plays an irreplaceable role in the field of regional security. It is an important partner of the Czech Republic and the EU relating to the Middle East peace process and the fight against terrorism.

During the conference, the deputies paid great attention to economic cooperation. Last year, Czech companies exported goods worth nine billion crowns to Egypt, while Egyptian imports reached a value of almost two and a half billion crowns. The Czech Republic exports to Egypt primarily the products of the automotive and engineering industries. The Czech companies continue to show interest in opportunities in the Egyptian market.
