(This article expired 28.02.2021.)

Small local development project realized by the Czech Republic Embassy in Cairo in cooperation with the Association for Integrated Healthcare of Cancer in Mout, Dakhla Oasis in 2016.

The main aim of the project was to financially support the victims of cancer and their families from the Dakhla Oasis. No direct finance, however, was provided. On the contrary - money was being paid for products made in the traditional way from palm fronds and wickers.

Project of four dimensions:

  • financial support to patients and their families – in the past money was offered to patients of cancer but such direct aid was refused, today money is being provided for goods made from palm waste
  • fighting social exclusion and stigma – victims of the illness suffer from huge social stigma and in some cases the families have difficulty finding a spouse; gathering together with others who have the same illness to make traditional goods helps fight social exclusion
  • preserving intangible heritagekeeping the tradition of making goods from the palm waste alive helps preserve the intangible heritage of the oasis for future generations
  • preserving environment – making use of the palm waste (fronds and wickers), which would normally be burnt by the farmers, helps preserve the environment of the oasis
