Ambassador's personal intervention in the case of tennis player Voráčová

On 12 January 2022, Ambassador Tomáš Dub met with Ms Lynette Wood, the newly appointed Director for Europe and Latin America Division at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He did so following a diplomatic note of protest submitted by our office regarding the detention of Czech tennis player Renata Voráčová.

During the hour-long meeting, the Ambassador summarised the important points of the case (see here) and expressed his concern at the treatment received by the tennis player Voráčová on Australian territory.

In response, Ms Wood said the situation was very unpleasant and the Department was working on a response to our diplomatic note. She also stated that the Ambassador's personal visit confirms the importance the Czech Republic attaches to this case. She thanked the Czech side for the important information and will pass it on to the Prime Minister's Office
