Czech Republic elected to the UN Human Rights Council

On the 10th of May 2022, the Czech Republic was elected to the UN Human Rights Council to fill the seat vacated by Russia as a result of its aggression against Ukraine. The Czech Republic received 157 votes in the UN General Assembly vote. The term of office begins on the date of election and lasts until the end of 2023.

"The promotion of human rights and democracy is a priority of mine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Pirate Party and our government. I am therefore very happy that the Czech Republic has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council and I thank the UN member states for the trust they have shown in me," said Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský.

The Czech Republic succeeded in the campaign thanks to its long-standing high profile in the field of human rights promotion and also its successful tenure in the body during the previous term, which ended at the end of last year. In the Council, the Czech Republic will focus on traditional issues such as freedom of the media, freedom of assembly and association, and support for cooperation with NGOs. The Czech Republic will also advocate for adequate Council responses to cases of serious human rights violations.

"We will get down to work in the Council right away, with a special session on human rights violations as a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine coming up this Thursday," Minister Lipavský added.
