Czech stall once again at the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra

From 21st – 23rd February 2020, one of the largest cultural events of the year, the National Multicultural Festival took place in Australia’s capital. Just like in past years, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Canberra set up stall as part of the European Village, which was opened by ACT Chief Minister, Mr Andrew Barr and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Mr Chris Steel.

This year’s stall was themed around Easter and traditions associated with it. Thanks to the skilled hands of Dominika Fusková, we were able to show festival-goers how to weave traditional braided whips, known as “pomlázky“, right from the beginning of the festival. Some visitors were even able to try it out for themselves. “Mazanec”, Easter “beránek”, painted eggs and “kraslice” were also on display at the stall. Visitors could also taste Kofola on tap.

As usual there was a large interest in various informational hand-outs and brochures. The Multicultural Festival also acted as a platform for presenting the new project “Czechia in Australia 2020“.

Australian radio ABC covered the events at the festival. Not only did the ABC choose Kolovrátek choir out of all the performers to sing for their live broadcast, but they also briefly interviewed Zuzana Vasitsch, a member of the group. Further questions, particularly relating to the Czech community in Australia and in Canberra were answered by Ambassador Tomáš Dub.

We would like to thank everyone who visited our stall and a special thank you goes out to Kolovrátek, who travelled all the way from Melbourne to take part in the event.
