Project Czechia in Australia 2020

On 22nd of January we officially launched our specially-themed web pages Czechia in Australia (here), which will not only map the footprint made by Czechs on the fifth continent, but will also commemorate 100 years since the opening of the first representative office, the Czechoslovak Consulate in Sydney, also signifying the initiation of diplomatic relations between Australia and Czechoslovakia, and later between the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Czechia in Australia

The 22nd of January happens to be the Anniversary of the Victory at Tobruk against Italy and Germany, where a Czechoslovakian battalion of 643 men (250 of which were Slovaks) were deployed. The regiment fought under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Karel Klapálek alongside Australians on their right, and Polish on their left. Czechs, Slovaks and Australians (among others) fought side by side for freedom and also laid down their lives together. It was a profoundly significant event, but nevertheless just the tip of the iceberg of everything that connects us with Australians and Australia and everything that we have gone through together. As the future comes from the past, our friendship is a solid foundation going into the times ahead.

On our webpages, you will find a lot of information from our joint history as well as events that we are organising this year to commemorate the past 100 years of diplomatic relations. The application „2020 Rok Česka v Austrálii“ is also available to download via the Google Store, which will simplify viewing the web pages on mobile devices.

It would bring us great joy if you were to visit our new webpages, where you will find interesting information, lessons and entertainment.

If you have any content to contribude to the website, we would highly appreciate it. Feel free to send it to canberra@embassy.mzv.cz.
