Memorial Day at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago

On May 27, 2019 the Bohemian National Cemetery Association together with the Friends of the Bohemian National Cemetery organized a commerative event on the occasion of Memorial Day, when the whole United States remembers war veterans and those who sacrificed their lives while serving in the US armed forces . The graves at the Bohemian National Cemetery remind us of the large number of Czechs and Slovaks who fought and died serving their new home country mainly in WW I and WW II. This year the Memorial Day service was attended not only by the members of the Bohemian National Cemetery Association and Friends of the Bohemian National Cemetery but also by representatives of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, Sokol Spirit, T. G. Masaryk School as well as other organizations and mainly veterans.
The Bohemian National Cemetery was founded in 1877. With its large size and about one hundred an fifty thousand graves it is the largest Czech cemetery outside the Czech Republic. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The most famous person buried at the cemetery is Anton Cermak who served as a Mayor of Chicago between the years of 1931 and 1933.
The Czech government highly appreciates the Czech - American heritage at the Bohemian National Cemetery by providing annual financial grant for maintenace and repairs. We hope many visitors and delegations from the Czech Republic, just like a number of times in the past, will visit the cemetery in the future as a result of close cooperation between the Consulate and the Association and Friends of Bohemian National Cemetery.
