30 years of partnership between Chicago and Prague

In June this year, 30 years have passed since Mayor Richard M. Daley signed a Sister Cities agreement (June 19, 1990) with the Mayor of Prague, Jaroslav Kořán.  Despite the considerable geographical distance, both cities have maintained active relations for three decades not only at the level of town halls of both cities, but also in the field of study exchanges and internships (doctors, lawyers), expert groups cooperation (crisis management, Smart Cities) exchanges and mainly in the field of cultural exchanges. Cooperation with Prague is overseen in Chicago by the Prague Committee Chicago Sister Cities International.

The Chicago Sister Cities International platform was established in 1960 and currently covers the cooperation of 29 partner cities, including Prague. More information HERE.

The Prague 2020 Days with a rich cultural and social program were planned for June this year, which had to be canceled due to the COVID19 pandemic. We believe that by the end of this year we will be able to celebrate, at least to a limited extent, the 30th anniversary of the Chicago-Prague partnership and thank those who have contributed to building and successfully developing this important partnership in recent years.

Some larger cultural projects have already been postponed to 2021, when we also expect the delayed start of direct American Airlines flights from Chicago to Prague, which were to start operating in May of this year.

In cooperation with the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, at least a virtual tour of the city and an invitation to visit Prague were made available on the Chicago Sister Cities website HERE.
