Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský spoke at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Turin

The meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in Turin, Italy, on 20 May 2022, was an opportunity for the foreign ministers of the 46 member states of the Council of Europe to discuss some key issues of this international organisation, whose main mission is to ensure the cooperation of member states in the protection of human rights and the promotion of democracy and the rule of law.

This year's meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the main executive body of this international organisation, took place in a new political context against the backdrop of the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which led to the expulsion of the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe. The ministers expressed their solidarity with Ukraine and their support for its people. They reaffirmed their unity on the basic values of the Council of Europe: peace, democracy, the rule of law and human rights, as well as their belief in multilateral cooperation while defending these values. They also outlined steps to strengthen the organisation's ability to fulfil its mission in the future. Ministers also endorsed the revision of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine, which aims to provide the expertise of the Council of Europe in relation to the immediate needs of Ukraine, affected by the brutal aggression of the Russian Federation.

The meeting was an opportunity, among other things, to take decisions on the organisation's work in areas such as artificial intelligence and cybercrime, freedom of expression, combating hate speech, monitoring, improving the protection of social rights, strengthening the participation of civil society organisations, protecting the rights of vulnerable groups and cultural heritage. At the end of the meeting, Italy handed over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers to Ireland for the next six months. On the margins of the meeting, Minister Lipavský, after delivering his speech, held bilateral talks with his counterparts from Armenia and Malta.
