Requiem 9/11 - the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York paid tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks

The Czech Center and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York, together with the Harmony Foundation, organized two commemorative evenings dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The event, entitled Requiem 2021, took place on September 9 and 10, 2021 at the Czech National Hall. The main point of the program of the multimedia project Requiem 2021 was the composition Oratio Spei (Prayer for Hope) by the prominent contemporary composer Juraj Filas, which was accompanied by a video mapping projection. The virtual show was projected on the wall in the Great Ballroom of the Czech National Hall. Requiem 2021 is a multimedia artwork directed by Anna Eva Kotyza, an American director of Czech-Slovak origin.

"I am glad that the Czech National Hall is once again alive with culture and public diplomacy after a long period of restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Requiem 2021 was the biggest and most important event so far this year," said Arnošt Kareš, the Consul General of the Czech Republic in New York. The event was attended by more than 100 people from among the prominent representatives of New York cultural institutions, representatives of the diplomatic corps and Czech compatriots. The maximum capacity, originally conceived for 75 participants, had to be increased due to high interest.

"The unprecedented terrorist attack, which caused the loss of nearly 3,000 lives in the heart of New York City alone twenty years ago, has affected the entire world and represents one of the most terrifying moments in modern American history. For each of us, it is also a personal reminder of the harrowing scenes of the fall of the two high-rise buildings Twins. Our project is also a tribute to the two Czech-born victims and a thank you to all those who put their lives on the line in the first moments after the attacks. Many of them had Czech roots," said Consul General Arnošt Kareš.

The commemorative evening also included works created in virtual reality by artist Markéta Gebrian, America's Got Talent semi-finalist Alex Dowis and director Anna Eva Kotyza.

Media coverage of the event was provided by the presence of the crews of ČT, TV Prima and TV Nova.
