A Literary Evening with Greenlandic Myths and Legends

On 3 December 2009, a literary evening focused on the translation of Greenlandic mythology and legends into Czech, including the accompanying illustrations, took place at the Residence of the Czech Embassy.

Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka introduced the Czech version of  Greenlandic Myths and Legends by Knud Rasmussen (Argo Publishing House 1998, second edition 2007, translation: Viola and Zdeněk Lyčka, illustrations: Martin Velíšek). In powerpoint show, he briefly presented the Arctic and Greenland, he introduced Inuit mythology to the audience and presented distinctive illustrations by Martin Velíšek.

At the same time, the exhibition of Martin Velíšek’s book illustrations took place at the Residence. The exhibition had already been shown in Greenland (Nuuk, Qaqortoq, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut and Ilulissat). Nowadays, its installation in Copenhagen is under discussion. In the summer 2010, the exhibition will be opened in Knud Rasmussen’s House in Hundested, North-West Sjælland.
