Prague Days in Copenhagen

On 15 – 20 September 2015 the Danish capital was a venue for the festival „Prague Days in Copenhagen“. The event was organized by the City of Prague in collaboration with the Copenhagen City Hall and the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Denmark.

The official opening took place on Tuesday 15 September in Danish Dance Art Centre Dansehallerne on the occasion of the premiere performance of the Prague dance company VerTeDance. The City of Prague and the Lord Mayor of Prague Ms. Adriana Krnacova have been represented by Ms. Eliska Kaplicky Fuchsova, Chairwoman of the Culture, Heritage, Expositions, Tourism and Foreign Relations Committee of the Prague City Assembly. The group VerTeDance performed also the following evening and both of the performances have received great reviews from the audience.

Famous Czech puppet theatre Spejbl and Hurvínek participated at the festival with a unique show called “Puppet Cabaret of Spejbl and Hurvínek” composed specifically for their production in Denmark. In Copenhagen, the theatre performed at five different scenes and the show was performed in Danish – one of the specialties of the theatre is staging the play in the language of the hosting country. All of the performances were basically sold out and according to the reactions of the audience can be considered as a major success.

Czech music was represented by the renowned Czech jazz group Trio David Dorůžka, which performed at two different locations – in jazz club Montmartre and in the culture and music centre Amagerbro Kultur. Traditional Czech folk music was introduced by Prague Castle Orchestra in restaurant Grøften in Tivoli and in Café Svejk in Frederiksberg.

Restaurant Grøften inside the Tivoli Gardens had been serving Czech dishes for the whole week prepared by Czech chef Mr. Martin Svatek. On Thursday 17 September Czech evening was held in the restaurant and visitors could experience Czech folk music by Prague Castle Orchestra.

The Danish film institute Cinemateket screened two Czech films which are set in Prague, namely Oscar-awarded film Kolya and comedy Empties, both directed by Jan Sverak.

The highlight of the festival was the Prague Day in Tivoli, which took place on Saturday 19 September in the Harmony Pavilion. Very wide cultural programme was prepared for the visitors. Theatre Spejbl and Hurvínek performed a series of short scenes. Czech folk music was played by Prague Castle Orchestra. Visitors had also a chance to taste the Prague ham, Czech beer and traditional Czech cakes. There was a pleasant atmosphere with a presence of many Danish visitors, as well as Czechs living in Denmark.

Furthermore, The City of Prague had a chance to present itself as an attractive tourist destination. During the whole week, an information car was offering the information about the Czech capital and about the autumn cultural programme.
