Peter Bugge winner of the Gratias agit Award 2020

This year's Gratias agit Award, given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, was won by Mr. Peter Brugge, a Danish university lecturer, translator, and a prominent promoter of the Czech language and culture.

Doc. Peter Bugge is a Danish historian, bohemian and translator. He is an expert on Central European and Czech history. He advocated both the establishment of Czech studies, and of the Central European Studies program at the University of Aarhus. He participated in many foreign researches, among others at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

He is a member of the editorial board in a number of professional periodicals, such as the Political Science Review, Word and sense, etc. In addition to his research activities, he also works as a translator. He translated into Danish, for example, books written by Václav Havel (Temptation, Letters to Olga, Disturbing the Peace, The Power of the Powerless, etc.), by Jiřina Salaquardová (poems), by Karel Čapek (Travels in the North, War with Newts) and by Bianca Bell (Lake). He has a long-term cooperation not only with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Copenhagen, but also with other institutions in the Czech Republic, such as the Institute for Totalitarian Regimes, where he is a member of the Scientific Council.

What is Gratias agit Award?

The Gratias Agit has been awarded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of the good name of the Czech Republic abroad ever since 1997 in appreciation of prominent personalities and organizations developing activities in nongovernmental fields. Along with the increasing role of civic society, this award is becoming an ever more prestigious prize for the voluntary activities of people committed to working for the benefit of the whole society, for the promotion of friendship among nations and for the promotion of the good name of the Czech Republic in the world.
