Film series by Karel Zeman in Cinematheque

Danish Film Institute has prepared a series of films dedicated to Karel Zeman, a Czech film director, artist and animator who is considered to be one of the founders of Czechoslovak animated film.

The opening of the series took place on Wednesday 8 December with the screening of the film The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1961). The Czech Ambassador to Denmark Radek Pech  welcomed the guests and after the screening there was a small reception for the visitors with Czech beer and wine. The film series then continued in December and January presenting some of the best films by Karel Zeman, who is rightly considered a pioneer of animated film.

Karel Zeman has made a number of world-renowned feature films known for creative use of special effects and poetics, the most famous of which are Invention for Destruction, The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, War of the Fools, On the Comet, The Stolen Airship and Journey to the Beginning of Time. Zeman is often considered to be a successor of French filmmaker Georges Méliès. Karel Zeman's films were also the inspiration for the work of American filmmaker and actor Terry Gilliam, whose film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was be introduced during the film series.
