Panel discussion and exhibition on the 25th anniversary of the Visegrad cooperation

On 13 April 2016 an international panel discussion was held at Trinity College Dublin, in its Long Room Hub. This event also marked the launch of an exhibition on the history of this regional cooperation between the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia which has been operating successfully for a quarter of a century.

The proceedings in the Arts and Humanities Research Institute were opened and moderated by the Dean of the Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies, Professor Jürgen Barkhoff. A short introductory address was given by Czech Ambassador to Ireland Hana Mottlová, which was followed by two wonderful historical contributions presented by Dr Graeme Murdoch, an Associated Professor in European history (Department of History), and Dr Balázs Apor, an Associated Professor in European Studies (Department of Russian and Slavic Studies). The subsequent panel discussion involved the Ambassadors of Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic (H.E. István Pálffy, H. E. Dušan Matulay and Hana Mottlová), as well as chargé d´affaires of the Polish Embassy Piotr Rakowski.

The panel discussion was complemented by an exhibition about the Visegrad cooperation, which has been prepared by the International Visegrad Fund and lasted till the end of April 2016.

The event, co-organised by the Arts and Humanities Research Institute and the Czech Embassy, served to strengthen interest in and knowledge of Central Europe in Ireland as the audience consisted primarily of students of European studies and history at Trinity College Dublin.
