A delegation of the Standing Senate Commission on Rural Development of the Parliament of the Czech Republic headed by the Vice-President of the Senate Jaroslav Kubera made a working visit to Ireland from September 24 to 29, 2017. The senators held a series of fruitful meetings and stimulating discussions in Dublin, Cork, Tullamore and Dundalk. The meetings focused on Irish rural development issues, government supports, regional management, demographic developments in rural areas, taxation and monetary measures of city and municipal budgets, structure of municipal elections, use of EU funding, agritourism and rural entrepreneurship.

The main meetings in Dublin were held in the Leinster House with Senator Denis O’Donovan and members of the Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht. The delegation then met with the Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development Seán Kyne and IFA Rural Development Executive Gerry Gunning.

In Cork, the delegation met with the Mayor of Cork, County Governor, Executive Director of the Council and Director of the Local Community Development Department and other City and County officials. As part of the Cork County Programme, the delegation also visited the Glenilen family dairy farm and exchanged views with members of the Bandon-Kinsale county council and councillors.

Discussions in Tullamore took place with city and district representatives as well as members of the Tidy Towns association.

During a visit to Dundalk, the delegation had the opportunity to acquaint itself with the current state of the Northern Ireland border and discussed the possible impacts of Brexit on further developments in this area. Compelling meetings were then also held with the Chairman of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, the Director of Northwest Newry & Mourne Co-Operative, members of the Enterprise Agency and others.
