Gala dinner with former students in Czechoslovakia, Czechia and Slovakia

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil has traditionally organized a gala dinner for former students graduated from universities in Czechoslovakia, Czechia or Slovakia living in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iraq (Nineveh Province), this year at the prestigious Divan Erbil Hotel on 17 November 2019.
 

Alumni of universities in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Pardubice, Hradec Králové or Liberec, as well as in Bratislava or Nitra, commemorated the events of 1989 and the fall of the communist regime on the Day of Freedom and Democracy and Student Day. The dinner was thematically complemented by a projection of a series of black and white photographs capturing the Velvet Revolution – 1989 Velvet Moments.

After welcoming honourable guests with their wives, the Consul General Mr. Michal Svoboda recalled historical events in Czechoslovakia 30 years ago, mentioned the activities of the Czech Consulate General in Erbil during the year 2019 aiming at developing humanitarian and development cooperation, cultural exchange and protection of monuments and cultural heritage,, trade and economic relations and cooperation in the field of education. He also informed about the events planned for next year, 2020.

The alumni, most with still very good level Czech or Slovak languages expressed their interest in closer contacts with the Consulate General and among themselves and in organizing common events. They also plan to create an Czech and Slovak Alumni Association.
