National Day Reception and celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia

On October 28, 2018, the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Erbil held a reception to celebrate the National Day and the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovak statehood and other important anniversaries.
 

 

The Gala Reception thematically decorated for the significant anniversaries in 2018 attended by almost 300 guests, including representatives of the administration, parliament and political parties of Iraqi Kurdistan and representatives of the business community took place in the ballroom of the Rotana Erbil Hotel on October 28, 2018. Former students in Czechoslovakia, diplomatic and consular corps, representatives of international organizations, Czech and local non-governmental organizations operating in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iraq implementing projects with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other important guests from cultural life and civil society also attended.  The reception in Erbil was supported by the participation of the Czech Ambassador to Iraq, His Excellency Mr. Jan Vyčítal.

In his speech accompanied by a video spot projection, Mr. Svoboda, Consul General, recalled the significant anniversaries of Czech and Slovak Century year 2018 and highlighted support of the Czech Republic to the Region of Iraqi Kurdistan. He underlined the potential for further development of relations in the area of education and cultural and trade exchanges. His Excellency Ambassador Vyčítal recalled the 85th anniversary of the establishment of Czech-Iraqi diplomatic relations and referred to development of Czech-Iraqi relations at the year of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Republic of Iraq. His Excellency Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir, Head of Department of Foreign Relations of Kurdistan Regional Government expressed his thanks to the Consulate General and to the Czech Republic for the unwavering support of development of relations with the Region of Iraqi Kurdistan and for the continuing humanitarian and military support provided by the Czech Republic in the fight against the so-called Islamic State. He highlighted the contribution of the Czech educational system for the Region of Iraqi Kurdistan and specifically mentioned the Erbil Campus of Technical University of Ostrava.

Thanks to the contributions of the sponsors, the festive atmosphere was accompanied by a good mood provided by the traditional Czech and Kurdish folklore, featuring the excellent dulcimer music of the Olšava Folklore Band from Uherský Brod, Moravia, Czech Republic and the Kurdish musicians under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Iraqi Kurdistan, good Moravian wine and Czech beer as well as traditional Czech beef goulash with dumplings and other gems of Czech cuisine. Participants of the reception received a photo souvenir with Czech and Slovak Century Logo background and a pen with the logo of the Czech Consulate General. The winners of the lucky-draw received small but valued Czech products from sponsors.

Exhibitions “1918-Czechoslovak Statehood” and “1968-Prague Spring” were introduced in an interesting way at the Reception. Representatives of the Czech Higher Education – Erbil Campus of Technical University in Ostrava and representatives of Czech companies active in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iraq could also use the Reception to present themselves.

The official Kurdistan Regional Government website and other media and press agencies - Rudaw, Kurdsat News, K24 and Zagros - have reported on the Czech Gala Reception.

This year's Czech National Day Reception was an exceptional and dignified reminder of a truly exceptional year for Czechs and Slovaks not only in the heart of Europe but also around the world and has made a significant contribution to building the good name of the Czech Republic and the Czech Consulate General in Kurdistan, Iraq.
