Exhibition Master Jan Hus (1415 – 2015) with an accompanying programme

From 11 September to 3 October an exhibition about Jan Hus will be on display in the city hall of Barendrecht. This exhibition, organized on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Jan Hus‘ martyr´s dead, is a result of collaboration of the Hussite Museum in Tábor, the city partnership of Barendrecht and Louny, and the Czech Centre in Rotterdam. The exhibition will be opened on 11 September 16.00 by the Czech ambassador in the Netherlands, H.E. Ms. Jana Reinišová. In addition, the short animated film Dějiny udatného českého národa / Jan Hus (The history of the brave Czech nation/ Jan Hus) will be screened and there will be a lecture by Peter Morée from the Protestant Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague who will introduce Jan Hus as a European thinker.

Jan Hus (1369/1370–1415) was an eminent medieval church reformer who paid for his convictions with his life. He was born around 1370 in a poor family in Husinec near Prachatice. Since 1390 he studied at Charles University in Prague and in 1409 he became rector of the university. Influenced by the English reformer John Wycliffe, Hus became a sharp critic of the moral failings of the Roman Catholic Church. His Czech language sermons at the Bethlehem Chapel attracted thousands of listeners. Finally, he had to account for his critical attitude toward the church at the Council of Constance. Despite assurances of safe passage, Hus was imprisoned after his arrival to Constance. Because he refused to retract his teachings, he was burned at the stake on 6 July 1415. After his death the Hussite Wars broke out, in which Hus‘ followers attempted to break free from the Catholic Church. In the 19th and 20th century he became a symbol of the Czech National Revival.

Everybody is most cordially invited to attend the opening on Friday, 11 September 16.00, in the city hall of Barendrecht.
