Jiří Kylián - Member of l’Académie des beaux-arts

Jiří Kylián, dancer and choreographer of the Czech origin living in the Netherlands, was elected a member of the French l'Académie des Beaux-arts on 25 April 2018. It is recognition of the exceptional qualities and world significance of the Czech native and, among other things, the long-time head of the Dutch Dance Theater (NDT) in The Hague.

The award is rarely awarded, foreigners exceptionally. The only Czech who was granted this exceptional recognition in 1835 was Antonín Rejch. Prague native, who became director of the Paris Conservatory and teacher of Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Cesar Frank, Charles Gounod and many others.

Until now l'Académie des Beaux-arts had only seven categories: Architecture, Film and Photography, Graphics, Music, Painting, Sculpture and a category of independent members.

From April 25, 2018, the choreography became a new category, and Jiří Kylián became a first member.

Congratulations!
