Commemoration of the 350th anniversary of Jan Amos Comenius' death

On 15 November, we commemorate  the 350th anniversary of Jan Amos Comenius' death. Comenius (1592-1670), Czech philosopher, humanist and the father of modern education, spent last 14 years of his life in The Netherlands and is buried in Naarden,  where you can find  the Comenius museum devoted to his work presented by the exhibition from the Comenius Museum  in Uherský Brod. To mark this anniversary, the Czech Embassy placed the banner  showing Comenius´s quote in Dutch (Not out of agreement, but out of doubt, progress is born) with painting  by Kateřina Kotyk, illustration student from the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia.

The installation of Comenius' banner is part of  the joint #GrowOurHumanity project. Inspiring quotes by Czech humanists who were also involved politically (Václav Havel, Jan Patočka, T. G. Masaryk, J. A. Komenský) will soon enter the Dutch public space. The project aims to bring an optimistic message, share the emphasis on humanity and encourage discussions about the future visions of the world. It is more than relevant in these turbulent times when facing the COVID-19 pandemic and other urging global issues.

Initially, there is a special focus on Jan Amos Comenius to remember the 350th anniversary of his death. He is particularly known for his teaching methods innovations. The banner showing Comenius´s quote in Dutch (Not out of agreement, but out of doubt, progress is born) will be placed on the fence of the Czech Embassy in The Hague. T

Campaign will last till the end of this year and be shared both in the public space and online by Dutch partner institutions such as Comenius Museum in Naarden, Education Museum in Dordrecht, Honorary Consulate in Groningen, schools, cultural organisations, EUNIC cluster Netherlands, community centres, libraries, publishing houses, etc.

A list of quotes can be found on the website The Embassy of the Czech Republic in The Hague and the Czech Centre Rotterdam. You can choose your favourite quote and put it in your window at home or in the office to bring humanistic inspiration to the Dutch streets.
