The Film Club - Colette

The Czech Centre Rotterdam will project the film Colette in its May Film Club. The love story of two prisoners: Vili (Jiří Mádl) and the beautiful Belgian Jewess Colette (Clémance Thioly) takes place in the horrific environment of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The drama about the power of love and the desire for freedom is based on the novel A Girl from Antwerp by renowned Czech writer Arnošt Lustig, who survived the hell of Auschwitz.

Colette arrives in the Auschwitz concentration camp and meets young Vili, who saves her from being murdered in the gas chamber by advising her what to say during the selection. Colette is soon employed in the manufactory of the SS official Weisacker (Eric Bouwer), who is struck by Colette’s beauty. Despite the daily suffering Vili and Colette become closer to each other. Their love empowers them to endure the hell of the concentration camp. The movie reveals the ruthless world of the daily struggle for survival in Auschwitz.

The film was inspired by the story of two Slovakian prisoners Alfred Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba (originally named Walter Rosenberg), who successfully escaped from the Auschwitz and disclosed the truth about the crimes against humanity to the public for the first time.
