Conference on security architecture in Europe co-organized by the Czech Embassy

The conference “Empowering Euro-Atlantic Security – New Challenges, Threats and Opportunities” held on October 17, 2011 in Helsinki was co-organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Finland. Discussion drew attention of politicians and media. Also Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Russian Federation Petr Kolář contributed to the conference with a speech.

Cooperation EU-NATO, future development of EU Battle Groups, EU common defense policy, partnership NATO-Russia after Lissabon summit and Russia's place in the European security system. These were the main topics of the conference organized by Poland's EU presidency in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Finland representing Czech presidency of the Visegrad Group in Helsinki and by the Atlantic Council of Finland. The Czech Republic was represented at the conference "Empowering Euro-Atlantic Security - New Challenges, Threats and Opportunities" by Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Finland Martin Tomčo and Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Russian Federation Petr Kolář who presented his speech and participated in a panel discussion afterwards.

Other participants in the discussion were e.g. Erkki Tuomioja - Minister for Foreign Affairs in Finland; Pertti Salolainen - Deputy Chairman of the Foregin Affairs Committee in the Finnish Parliament, former Deputy Prime Minister; Sven Mikser - a member of the Estonian Parliament, former Minister of Defense in Estonia; Adam D. Rotfeld - a diplomat, former Minister for Foreign Affairs in Poland etc. The conference in the form of 4 hours long think-tank was also attended by approx. 100 guests, above all members of Finnish Parliament, employees from Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs, journalists, academics and diplomatic staff in Helsinki. Also students (including a few Czechs) from universities in Helsinki were present at the conference. The guests had a possibility to join the discussion actively and ask questions.
