For already 25 years docent Helena Lehečková has been dealing with neurolinguistics, a science branch studying the relation between language and brain, at the University of Helsinki. Mrs. Lehečková as one of rare foreigners and the only Czech so far has recently become a member of The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters (Societa Scientiarum Fennica). On the occasion of this significant academic honour Ambassador Martin Tomčo congratulated her at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki on 1st March 2011.
Docent Lehečková, a graduate in Czech and Finno-Ugric languages from the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, has been working at the Helsinki University since 1986. With the Ambassador they were discussing a position of the Czech language in Finland, possibilities of Finnish graduates to work with the Czech language. Also cooperation between students of the Czech language and the Embassy in promoting Czech culture in Finland was discussed.
During last 25 years at the University of Helsinki Mrs. Lehečková has built a study branch of the Czech language and culture, which is belongs to the most successful branches among so called small languages. Mrs. Lehečková teaches all the linguistic disciplines in the frame of this branch, from phonetics through grammar and stylistics ending up with translation and Czech linguistic science. Each academic year there are about 90 students of the branch in all classes altogether. Scientific publications of docent Lehečková deal mainly with aphasia, i.e. language disorder due to brain damage. Different activity of Mrs. Lehečková can be found in literature for children; her fairy tale book "K čertu!" is being prepared for publishing in Finnish (Hitsi viekööt!) with support of the Czech Embassy this year.
