Director Lukáš Kokeš was a guest at Helsinki Film Festival DocPoint

During January 22 – 27, 2013 the 12th Documentary Film Festival (DocPoint) took place in Helsinki (Kinopalatsi 9). Among many projections there was also a Czech film “Fortress” by Klára Tasovská and Lukáš Kokeš. Screenings of the film went on 24 January (3 p.m.) and 26 January (4 p.m.). The director Lukáš Kokeš was present at the screening 24 January and after that he answered questions from the public. This film won a prize in the Czech competition at Jihlava International Festival (October 2012) and it took part in the prestigious Documentary Film Festival in Copenhagen (November 2012). Also the film “Private Universe” by Helena Třeštíková was shown at the festival (22 January at 6 p.m.).
It seems to be bizarre but 20 years after the fall of the USSR there is a state which is still fighting with live heritage of communism. A state which is not recognized by almost anybody. A state with 500 000 citizens of different nationalities who have three or four different passports in order to be able to get out there at all. A state which until recently was governed by president Smirmov wearing a jacket with cutaway sleeves.
Two young Czech documentarists are going to this mysterious dark country to shoot a poetic film about a man, his relation to freedom and also about his desire to escape from the modern world into an ideal universe where the state really would take care of him.
The film is one of the most interesting documentaries of the recent time. There are light humour and strong moments in it. It refers to a country thousands of kilometers far away at the edge of Europe but still its topic is universal.
