Lecture for Bohemists at the Embassy

Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki together with the Helsinki University organized on 11 March 2014 a lecture "From the practice of the Language Consulting Centre in Prague: phonetic, orthographic and other inquiries" for students and absolvents of bohemistics, pedagogues and translators. Mgr. Veronika Štěpánová. researcher of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was as a guest.

The lecture presented the activity of the Language Consulting Centre, which is a part of the Department of Language Cultivation of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. V. Štěpánová selected some authentic questions related to the Finnish language. She focused especially on phonetic problems examined in a larger context because language levels for example in questions concerning pronunciation of foreign words and proper names often overlap each other. The listeners were informed about the project “Pronunciation of non-integrated lexical items in Czech” and they were acquainted with the newest book production of the Institute of the Czech Language.

Mgr. Veronika Štěpánová– born in 1983 in Aš, graduated from the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague, specialisation Phonetics and Czech language and literature (diploma thesis: Temporal features of Czech fricatives). Since 2009 Ph.D. student at the Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague (topic of the dissertation: Czech orthoepic codification), external teaching at this institute.  2008–2011 lector at the Higher School of Drama in Prague; since 2009 researcher at the Department of Language Cultivation of the Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Major fields of interest: Czech pronunciation, speech in media, language cultivation. Regular attendance at local and international conferences and publishing in scientific journals (e.g. Naše řeč, Slovo a slovesnost).
