Czech Public Holidays

Below is the list of the Czech Republic public and other holidays. During these days most of the shops, banks and public offices including the Czech diplomatic missions are closed.

 Czech National Holidays

1. 1.     - Restoration Day of the Independent Czech State (The independent Czech Republic was created in 1993, after dissolution of Czechoslovakia.)

8. 5.     - Liberation Day (1945, marks the end of the European part of the World War II)

5. 7.     - Saints Cyril and Methodius (In 863, Church teachers St. Cyril (Constantine) and Metoděj (Methodius) came from the Balkans to Great Moravia to propagate Christian faith and literacy.)

6. 7.     - Jan Hus Day (The religious reformer Jan Hus was burnt to death at the stake in 1415.)

28. 9.   - Czech Statehood Day (In 935, St. Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia, now patron of the Czech State, was murdered by his brother.)

28. 10. - Anniversary of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovakia (1918) - National Day

17. 11. - Fight for Freedom and Democracy Day (Commemorating the student demonstration against Nazi occupation in 1939, and the demonstration in 1989 that started the Velvet Revolution.)

 

Other Holidays

1. 1.      - New Year’s Day

Movable feast - Easter Monday (The Monday coming after the first Sunday after the first spring's fullmoon. Spring is considered as starting on the day of spring equinox, usually 21 March). Easter is celebrated for two days - Sunday and Monday. ) and Good Friday (the Friday preceding Easter Sunday)
