Czech Support to Irrigation Channel Construction and Development of Shobar Khel

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad has decided to support construction of a concrete irrigation channel in Shobar Khel Village in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The small scale project „Water Management: To Eradicate Poverty and Improve Agricultural Output“ is to be implemented by Human Development Organization under the Framework of the Official Development Assistance of the Czech Republic

The construction of the concrete channel will help to fight with the issue of water scarcity, which becomes a major issue not only in Pakistan, but globally. Improvement of management of the available water resources in Shobar Khel will help to decrease the wastage of water and will enable the local farmers to use the available resources efficiently. This will, in turn, lead to an expected 100% increase in their agricultural output and to the development of the village and of the living standards of the local population. Secondly, but not less importantly, the project will reduce occurrence of disputes between the farmers over the limited water resources, and with the simplification of land irrigation, it will fight against child labour. The project can also serve as an example to be replicated by local community in other parts of the country.

The Contract concerning the implementation of the local small scale project under the framework of the Official Development Assistance of the Czech Republic was signed at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad on March 28, 2019. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad, Mrs. Jaroslava Bobková, and the Chief Executive Officer of Human Development Organization, Mr. Shah Ahmad Khan signed the Contract on behalf of the two contracting parties.

Today’s world is facing many global challenges out of which many are linked to the issue of poverty. After more than 20 years of democratic development, the Czech Republic is among the 35 richest countries in the world, making it morally obliged to help less prosperous regions. Development cooperation has, therefore, become an important component of the Czech foreign policy. The Czech Republic supports the implementation of development projects, offers scholarships enabling students to enrol at Czech universities, provides humanitarian aid, as well as a number of related activities. At the same time, it actively participates in international organisations that deal with issues of developing countries. In Pakistan, the Czech Republic strives to boost the local development bilaterally through annual sustainable small scale projects within the Framework of the Official development assistance of the Czech Republic, as well as multilaterally as a Member State of the European Union and as a party to other development and humanitarian aid initiatives.
