Promoting Girls Education with Safe Sanitation

To support girls‘ access to education in Pakistan, the Czech Republic has decided to support a local small scale project aimed at ensuring sanitation at the selected government girls‘ schools in Upper Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project should be implemented by a local NGO Society for Sustainable Development

The project titled “Promoting girls education with safe sanitation” is focused on ensuring safe drinking water and sanitation at three government girls‘ schools in Upper Dir. A well will be constructed and water pipe system established for ensuring access to safe water. New latrines will be built and the old ones renovated and safe sanitation facilities introduced in the schools.

It is not only a development project but it has an outreach to the field of human rights (right to education, women’s rights) as well. The main aim of the project is to ensure sanitation in the schools, the lack of which is one of the main reasons why girls are not sent to schools by their parents at all or why they drop out when they reach puberty. Ensuring the students with access to safe water and decent sanitation in their schools will not only increase the ratio of girls enrolled in schools, but will also benefit their health. As a part of the project, hygiene awareness sessions will be held as well and a campaign for new students enrolment will be conducted.

The Contract concerning the implementation of the local small-scale project under the framework of the Official Development Assistance of the Czech Republic was signed at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad on July 8, 2019. Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Islamabad, Mrs. Jaroslava Bobková, and the Chief Executive Officer of Society for Sustainable Development, Mr. Aftab Ahmed Awan signed the Contract on behalf of the two contracting parties.
