Konstatin Biebl 1926: Czech Poet in Java

The visit of Czech poet Konstantin Biebl to Java, his perception of life in the Dutch colony and his poems inspired by the exotic journey, undertaken almost ninety years ago were introduced to members and guests of the Indonesian Heritage Society by Ms Michala Tomanova in an event co-organised by the Embassy.

Konstantin Biebl’s collection of poems On the Ship Bringing Tea and Coffee, first published in 1927, drew inspiration from the author’s visit to the island of Java in the preceding year. His sojourn in Semarang inspired Michala Tomanova, staying in the same city on an Indonesian government scholarship recently, to trace Biebl’s moves in the island. She confronted his photographs, kept in the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague, with the current look of the sights, adding quotes of Biebl’s records of his travels and his verses in English and Indonesian translations. Panels mapping Biebl’s photos, impressions and texts were exhibited in the Ambassador’s residence during a public lecture by Michala Tomanova, co-organised by the Embassy and the Indonesian Heritage Society within its Rumahku programme on 7 May 2015.
