Media training of junior diplomats in the Czech Radio

On February 25, 2014 MFA junior diplomats participated in a mock interview at Czech Radio as a part of their media skills training.

The Diplomatic Academy of the MFA has cooperated with foreign editors in the Czech media for a long time concerning training junior diplomats. On February 25, 2014 young listeners of the Diplomatic Academy had the opportunity to try a radio interview with the Head of Foreign Desk, Pavel Novák. Although it was only a simulation and the interview was not broadcasted live, the young diplomats had to respond to questions in the same way as if it were the actual, live broadcast.

The atmosphere at the Czech Radio studios where the interviews were recorded actually helped give the trainees a realness to the situation, along with the questions posed by Pavel Novák regarding Czech foreign policy. The simulation topics focused on specialization areas of the young diplomats: for example, it was necessary to defend the behavior of the Czech mission in Mali, the priorities of Czech economic diplomacy, hygienic standards of meat imported into the Russian Federation or standard of Czech generators exported to Venezuela. The diplomats had an opportunity to discuss their appearances with a leading foreign editor and obtain advice so that when the red “On Air” light was on, their appearance would be perfect.

Media skills training is an integral part of the theoretical training to young Czech diplomats studying at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Junior diplomats traditionally highly value this training because they are exposed to real life situations, in which they will no doubt meet at some time during their professional career in Czech diplomacy.
