Diplomatic Academy student Ondrej Hovádek sent an interim report from his short-term secondment to the Czech Embassy in Beijing, where he is posted from 7th April to 22nd May.

“In the context of diplomatic training I was sent to the Czech Embassy in Beijing, whose importance, especially in recent years has grown. It is one of the larger embassies where you can become acquainted with a variety of agendas, but also interesting people: guests and colleagues from other embassies. Right from the first day I became involved in the Embassy with their temporary colleagues.

Whether it was the political, economic or cultural agenda, my arrival was marked by a large delegation of politicians and businessmen from the Czech Republic which toured China for one week and whose tour preparation I was involved with. Thus it was a great opportunity to gain practical experience of working in a dynamic office full rotations.

Representing the Czech Republic at conferences, coordination meetings of diplomats visiting the EU delegation or meeting minutes and escorting guests from the Czech Republic – everything is new and my time here flies by.

China itself is very interesting to study, as it is a traditional country with a rich culture and history. Understanding local customs and traditions is inherent to any traineeship at the Diplomatic Academy and my internship was not an exception. I believe that the lessons I have learned will be put to good use in the future, whether working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or privately.

I must also thank all the employees at the Embassy in Beijing for being very helpful and accepting my desire to fill my calendar full of exciting activities from all areas of the work of diplomats.”
