Junior diplomats together with employees of other ministries were learning how to negotiate

Under the supervision of Ms Ida Manton of the Dutch Clingendael Institute, employees of Czech ministries together with students of the Diplomatic Academy were being taught about the theory and practice of international negotiations.

Apart from our junior diplomats, the course was on 22 and 23 of April attended by employees of the Ministries of Culture, Education, Interior, and Industry and Trade. It comprised of a theoretical part, during which the participants were informed about theoretical aspects of negotiations, body language, techniques etc. Later, two simulations of negotiations based on real events were held.

The first simulation dealt with the Kosovo conflict and possibilities of its resolution. The course participants found themselves in the roles of both the directly involved actors – Serbia and Kosovo – and great powers like the United States and Russia. The subject of the second simulation was a resolution on creation of a new UN agency tasked with coordinating humanitarian assistance. After the negotiations were over, the participants were shown a film documenting how these negotiations had been pursued in reality.  All this with expert commentary by the instructor.
