Within Czech development cooperation, Zambia enjoyed the status of a programme country until 2010. Based on the Development Cooperation Strategy of the Czech Republic 2010 – 2017, Zambia now belongs to the group of countries where current activities will benefit from continued aid but revised to suit existing needs, as compared to the previous period of the programme.

The Czech Republic has steadily focused its activities on the Western Province which remains somewhat isolated and outside other donors’ interest. Given the persistently high infant and maternal mortality rates in Zambia, the Czech Republic decided to support the improvement of available healthcare in this particular area. Within several mutually intertwined projects, the Czech Republic continues to help improve prenatal and postnatal care, not merely by offering the necessary medical equipment and infrastructure, but also by providing training.

A previous project dealt with the impacts of mining and ore processing on the environment and the health of the population. This project was implemented in certain areas of the Central and Copperbelt Province. Overall, the main focus areas in 2012 were health, education and agriculture.

In addition to development projects under the Czech Development Agency (CZDA) there are also small local projects implemented by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Harare. Government scholarships are also provided to the students of Zambia.
