Indian Base for the Transformation of Burma, 2009

Description: This project responds to the lack of efficient and coordinated activities in India for democracy in Burma, to the dramatic situation of Burmese refugees living in India and to the famine in Burma's Chin State. The important position of India as partner of the Burmese regime and as the world's largest democracy led to the conclusion, that support should be facilitated also from Burma's Western side. Also, raising awareness in the Czech Republic and Europe about these issues still needs to be intensified.

Activities Implemented in 2009

  • support of the partner organization Burma Centre Delhi (BCD) for their registration and to establish and equip their office; knowledge transfer for project management
  • fact finding trip to India:
    • networking meeting of BCP and BCD
    • meetings with important stakeholders of Burmese activities based in Delhi
    • meeting with refugees and their self-help groups, at Yamuna Clinic, with Indian researchers, with interested CSOs and with Czech Ambassador
    • meeting with Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO) and identifying possible support channels for Burmese population in famine affected areas
    • meeting with exile media Mizzima News and the local branch of Democratic Voice of Burma and identifying possibilities of cooperation in 2010
    • negotiations with Chin and Kachin women groups about cooperation and possible portfolio of fair trade shop; first sample products bought and improvements discussed
  • trip of BCD project staff to Prague; their participation in a press conference for the launch of the campaign and at the international conference of Burmese activists of BCP in Prague, with presentation about project
  • networking workshop of BCD and Journalists' Forum Assam in Guwahati, Assam
  • mapping the potential of activities in Delhi and India's Northeastern states for Burma in a survey, identifying possible recipients of micro grants in 2010
  • installation and adaptation of software for online shop; creation of Czech language version and content about refugees in India and the manufacturers; preparation of product presentations; development of workflow for sale, accounting and logistics
  • fund raising campaign: concept, material and events; intensive work with media
  • press conference and opening of photo exhibition with representative from CHRO
  • preparation of micro grant scheme for implementation in 2010

Outputs Achieved in 2009

  • support of structures in India: partner organization completed legal registration and received permission to open bank account; transfer of know how for project management and accountancy; fact finding trip to Delhi
  • networking event of BCD and trip of BCD to Prague
  • 35 products from Burmese refugees in online shop; 105 fair trade items sold
  • fund raising campaign "Let's help the Burmese": web page, 2 video spots, web banner, press conference, 2 press releases, 200 posters, 7700 color information flyers, 1000 table panels, 1500 free tea samples with appeal for donation for 80 tea rooms, photo exhibition, 7 events in tea rooms and 1 with Chin refugees in the theatre Disk; media kit with DVD and photos; admission to Donors' SMS with "DMS BAMBUS"; in total over 122,000 CZK collected
  • media partnership established with Radio Wave (Český rozhlas) with particular support for campaign, targeting younger audience
