Advancing Roma Visibility, 2011

MFA financial support: 350.000,- CZK

The activities of the project were centred on efforts to create a pool of Roma and non-Roma journalists from the three target countries and provide them with training and reporting opportunities; build a regional news and information portal for and on Roma communities in the Balkans; and build a network of Roma organisations and other organisations focusing on minority issues in the region.

Journalist participants of the project were recruited between March and May 2011. The 18 selected journalists attended an intense training in multimedia storytelling in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in May and June 2011. The project trainers then worked with journalists on specific story assignments in their own countries in June and July 2011.

The regional portal website was designed and built between April and July and fine-tuned in August and September 2011, when content originally produced within this project by the 18 journalist participants was published.

A database of Roma and other organisations focusing on minority issues and human rights was created between March and June 2011. The database was then partly uploaded to a section within the above mentioned regional portal and its future functioning as the central part of the proposed network presented at a regional forum organised as part of this project in October 2011 in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Market research studies into prospects for a regional news portal and a radio show in Bosnia were conducted between April and May 2011.
