17 July – Commemoration of the Day of International Criminal Justice

On 17 July 1998 the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Justice was adopted and since the Review Conference of the Rome Statute in Kampala, Uganda, in 2010, this day has been commemorated as the Day of International Criminal Justice. At the very heart of the commemoration is to raise awareness of the international criminal justice and fight against impunity.
The Czech Republic remains committed to supporting the international criminal justice and therefore promotes achieving universality of the Rome Statute which currently has 124 State Parties. The Czech Republic is pleased that Mr. Robert Fremr serves as a judge for the term 2012–2021. The Czech Republic provides regularly voluntary contributions to the Trust Fund for Victims.
This year’s commemoration is marked by universality campaign. The ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals for the most serious crimes under international law, i.e. genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and in future also the crime of aggression.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Lubomír Zaorálek actively participated in promotion of the universality of the ICC together with his counterparts from Argentina, Cyprus, Denmark and the Minister of Justice of Senegal and current President of the Assembly of States Parties.
