20th anniversary of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court

17 July, the day when the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court („ICC“) was adopted in 1998, is commemorated as the Day of International Criminal Justice. At the very heart of the commemoration is to raise awareness of the international criminal justice and fight against impunity.

Today’s date also marks the activation of the jurisdiction of the ICC over the crime of aggression. As Czechoslovakia was a victim of two aggressions in the 20th century, the Czech Republic therefore welcomes this step.
 

The Czech Republic remains committed to supporting the international criminal justice, especially the ICC. The Czech judge Mr. Robert Fremr serves as a judge for the term 2012–2021 and as of March 2018 the Court’s First Vice-President. The Czech Republic provides regularly voluntary contributions to the Trust Fund for Victims.

The ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals for the most serious crimes under international law, i.e. genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression, based on the principle of complementarity.
