According to Minister Kohout the European Union is more solid now than ever before

Corfu (28 June 2009) - According to the President of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU and Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Government Jan Kohout, today’s result of the informal Foreign Ministers’ meeting is an unambiguous proof that the “European Union is not only operational but also a solid allied grouping,” said Minister after the Foreign Ministers’ informal meeting on the Greek island of Corfu.

Based on the Czech initiative, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU Member States immediately after the informal meeting of countries gathered in the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) agreed on strong diplomatic reaction on Iran. Its authorities in the past days stepped up pressure on Western countries which strongly denounced brutal repression of peaceful demonstrations and which criticized the disrespect of the fundamental human values and the democratic dialogue. "As the Presidency of the European Union we presented several times clearly that no EU Member State intends to interfere in the internal affairs of Iran, but we have also presented that we cannot keep silent while Tehran doesn't respect basic human rights, such as the possibility of free expression of opinion or holding a democratic dialogue," added Jan Kohout.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the informal meeting on the Greek island of Corfu achieved consent today on three declarations (two addressed to Iran and one relating the military coup in Honduras). "We were able to find support for common approach to Iran very quickly within the EU 27. The EU now moves from words to acts and it is a proof that not only the EU is a solid and solidary community, but also that it is operational in the practical meaning of the word," added the Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Government Jan Kohout.
