Asia-Europe ASEM Seminar on Human Rights

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be hosting Asia-Europe Seminar on Human Rights, entitled National and Regional Human Rights Mechanisms. This will be the largest similar event with over 100 participants from both continents.

The main objective of the 11th Seminar is to facilitate a dialogue on regional and national mechanism-building. Specifically, the Seminar aims to develop recommendations to strengthen regional and national mechanisms in Asia and Europe.

Programme

On the first day (Wednesday 23 Nov) there will be an opening plenary with introductory messages and keynote speeches (featuring also the address of the deputy minister Jiří Schneider).

The second day (Thursday 24 Nov) will be devoted to working group discussion which will focus on:

  • national human rights mechanisms;
  • regional human rights mechanisms;
  • procedural effectiveness of regional human rights mechanisms and
  • multi-level architecture of human rights mechanisms.

The closing plenary on Friday the 25th will feature the reports from the working groups and the seminar conclusions.

The Czech Republic will broaden the Seminar with special panel discussion on the topic "Transition to the New Legal Order in the Czech Republic with a special focus on the creation of the national system of protection of human rights". Among others, Ms Monika Šimůnková, Government Human Rights Commissioner, and Mr Filip Glotzmann, Head of the Office of the Public Defender of Rights, have already confirmed their participation. The participation at the Seminar is possible with invitation only.

The 11th informal Seminar on Human Rights is co-organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (delegated by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs), and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs,

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Informal Seminars on Human Rights launched in 1997 to provide an arena for non-confrontational debate on human rights issues between government officials, academics and civil society organisations of the 48 ASEM partners. The series was launched in 1997 at the initiative of the foreign ministries of France and Sweden.

Journalists are invited to the opening plenary on November 23, 5.30pm - 8pm.
