The Friends of Syrian People Group was established through initiatives of the United Nations and Arab League on 24 February 2012 in Tunis, Tunisia. On 12 December 2012, the fourth meeting of the group was held in Marrakech, Morocco. The Czech Republic was represented by the First Deputy Foreign Minister and Secretary of State for European Affairs H. E. Jiří Schneider. The main topic of the conference was international recognition of the National Coalition of the Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces that was created on 11 November 2012 in Doha, Qatar.

During the meeting in Marrakech Mr. Schneider also met with H. E. Robert Ford, the United States´ special envoy for Syria. The Czech Republic currently serves as the Protecting Power for the United States in Syria.

Following acceptance of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as legitimate representatives of the Syrian people by the EU at the meeting of the Foreign Ministers in Brussels, December 10, the Czech Republic has appointed a liaison to the National Coalition, based in Cairo, Egypt. Mr. Milan Slanec, Deputy Head of the Czech Embassy in Cairo, will serve in this capacity.

The Czech Republic has been actively involved in searching for the political solution of the Syrian crisis, which in first place must be based on stopping the violence and support for the peaceful transition to a pluralistic political system that ensures the basic rights for all citizens of Syria. The Czech Republic is also active in mediating the humanitarian aid to the Syrian people who are in a severe humanitarian situation, both inside Syria and in neighboring countries.
