Minister Kohout held talks with Israeli Minister about the Presidential visit to Israel

On the margins of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout held talks with Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Yuval Steinitz.

During their meeting, the ministers covered the latest progress in direct negotiations between Israel and The Palestinian Authority. The ministers also discussed the preparations of the forthcoming visit of President Miloš Zeman, which will focus on the further development of political relations, on the strengthening of cooperation in the areas of science and research and on the support for business cooperation.

The ministers exchanged their views on the latest developments in Syria and on diplomatic efforts which had eventually made Syria willing to declare its interest to place its chemical weapons under international control.

Certain conditions provided, the current pressure on Iran could deliver similar results. The Israeli partner underscored that it was unacceptable Iran should escape the focused international pressure. In his opinion, it is not possible to accept proposals that were not based on sufficient guarantees and would rather resemble the Munich Agreement. Minister Kohout agreed that, bearing in mind our historic experience, we must be cautious. The Iranian nuclear program must be placed under international supervision complying with UN Security Council resolutions. He assured that the steps taken by the Czech Republic in this respect are closely coordinated with her allies.
