Crisis in Ukraine: Steps Taken by the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic supports the earliest formation of an inclusive Ukrainian government that would calm down the situation in the country and lead it to an early parliamentary and presidential elections. The Czech government supports the mission of the three foreign ministers in Kyiv. Minister of foreign affairs Lubomír Zaorálek met the Ukrainian Ambassador on 19 February. The Minister told the Ambassador the methods used against the protestors are unacceptable.

At the extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on 20 February the Czech Republic strongly supported sanctions against the representatives of the Ukrainian regime bearing political responsibility for the current situation including the loss of lives, violations of human rights and use of violence against protestors. Furthermore, the Czech Republic suggested for the EU to issue an embargo on non-lethal weapons arms that are being used against the protestors.

Czech Government and the Ministry of foreign Affairs are ready to use the means available to cover humanitarian needs caused by the current situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to offer humanitarian assistance and supports Czech non-governmental organizations either active in Ukraine or raising money from the public. Next week the Government will decide on the activation of the MEDEVAC, a programme focused on evacuation of wounded and ill individuals for medical treatment in the Czech Republic.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs works closely with the Ministry of Interior and other government departments and institutions when dealing with issues related to potential impacts of the developments in Ukraine on the Czech Republic. The efforts focus in particular on the migration pressures from Ukraine to the Czech Republic and energy security of the Czech Republic.

Last but not least the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deals with issues related to security of the foreign service personnel and the families located at mission in Ukraine, humanitarian workers and other Czech citizens, including evacuation scenarios if needed.
