Czech MFA’s position on the so-called referenda in the south-eastern Ukraine

The Czech MFA does not recognize the results of the so-called referenda on independence held in Donetsk and Luhansk region on Sunday, May 11. The vote was conducted in the way violating the international law, the Ukrainian constitution and elementary democratic principles and it is only yet another step in a coordinated effort to destabilise the South-East of Ukraine and an unacceptable attempt to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Czech MFA regrets the loss of lives of the local people, victims of armed clashes, and calls for the return to constitutionality and order in the South-East of Ukraine. It also supports the Ukrainian government’s efforts for constitutional reform and decentralization of the country, steps that should provide a platform for much needed national dialogue.
