Deputy Minister Drulák in Geneva

 

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Petr Drulák visited Geneva on June 1-2, 2015 where he participated in the official opening of the 104th meeting of the International Labour Conference and held talks with UN representatives.

The Deputy Minister discussed the social dimension of the Czech foreign policy and the situation in the labour market of the Czech Republic with Director General of the International Labour Organisation Guy Ryder.

Deputy Minister Drulák also held talks with Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Thomas Alexander Aleinikoff.  Their meeting focused on the current refugee and migration crisis in the Mediterranean and potential cooperation of European countries with the UNHCR. Aleinikoff expressed his appreciation of the Czech Government´s decision to resettle Syrian families from Jordan and offer scholarships for Syrian refugees in the Zaatari Refugee Camp, as well as contributions in support of internally displaced persons in Ukraine.

The discussion with Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlström was devoted to the outcome of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction and its follow-up, linkages between disaster risk reduction and development agenda and potential role of the Czech Republic on the regional and international level.

Deputy Minister Drulák also met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein and President of the Human Rights Council (HRC) Joachim Ruecker to debate the human rights agenda. The High Commissioner acknowledged the Czech activities in the Human Rights Council and welcomed increased Czech voluntary contribution to the OHCHR budget and continuous support for the OHCHR's independence. The meeting also focused on the comprehensive and humane solution of the migration crisis. The discussion with the HRC President was dedicated mainly to the challenges the UN's principal human rights body faces, including ensuring effectiveness and sustainability of its work.

The Deputy Minister concluded his Geneva visit by meeting with the management representatives of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and visiting its scientific facilities.
