Professor Pavel Šturma Re-elected Member of the UN International Law Commission

 

The candidate of the Czech Republic, Prof. Pavel Šturma, was re-elected by the United Nations General Assembly to the International Law Commission. The vote was held on November 3, 2016, in New York.

Prof. Pavel Šturma, the Head of the International Law Department of the Charles University, has been a member of the Commission since 2012. He will serve as a member of the Commission for the next five-years-term from 2017 to 2021.  He was re-elected by a significant number of 160 votes.

The Commission is composed of independent experts with recognized competence in international law. It is an important UN body tasked with the promotion of the development of international law and its codification. Since it was established in 1948, the Commission prepared a number of draft treaties of universal character, as well as guidelines and other documents from various areas of international law, including the law of treaties, international criminal law and the law of the responsibility of States and international organizations.

The re-election of Prof. Šturma represents the appreciation of the qualities of the Czech candidate and confirms the recognition of the Czech international legal doctrine and practice at the international level.
