Minister Zaorálek Held Talks with Cape Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense

On April 18, 2017, Minister Lubomír Zaorálek held talks in the Czernin Palace with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense of the Republic of Cape Verde Luís Felipe Tavares. The talks focused on deepening of bilateral relations, economic and development cooperation, and the Special Partnership EU-Cape Verde.

Both sides agreed to further develop mutual relations and praised the positive role of both countries’ honorary consuls in this respect. Minister Zaorálek appreciated Cape Verde’s record on economic development as well as its long-standing stable democratic system. Minister Tavares pointed out the positive role of the EU in this regard, and expressed the gratitude of his country for the lasting scholarship cooperation that enabled tens of Cape Verde students to study in Czech universities. The graduates include also current Minister of Agriculture and Environment who speaks fluent Czech.

Both ministers expressed their support for further development of economic cooperation, especially in the tourism sector and related industries and in the renewable energy sector. Such cooperation would bring opportunities for Czech firms on one hand, and contribute to the development of Cape Verde’s economy on the other hand.

Minister Zaorálek and his counterpart also appreciated numerous successes achieved within the Special Partnership EU-Cape Verde, e.g. closing of the readmission agreement and visa facilitation agreement. Both ministers agreed on the need to further deepen the security cooperation within this partnership.

During his visit to the Czech Republic on April 18–19, Minister Tavares also discussed concrete possibilities of economic cooperation at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, held talks about deepening of the cooperation between universities at the Ministry of Education and about cooperation between both capitals at the Prague City Hall. In the end, Cape Verde Minister Tavares met with Czech Minister of Culture Daniel Herman and visited the University of Hradec Králové.
