Deputy Minister Šrámek Handed over Certificates of Hope to RFE/RL Fellows

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ivo Šrámek received six journalists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Macedonia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine on May 25, 2017 in the Czernin Palace to award them with Certificates of Hope in recognition of the value of their individual voices in contributing to free speech and media freedom.

These young journalists just finished their Václav Havel Journalism Fellowship and Jiří Dienstbier Journalism Fellowship in the Prague headquarters of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Deputy Minister Šrámek stressed the irreplaceable role of independent media in the protection of democracy and human rights, and appreciated the close cooperation with Radio Free Europe. The following discussion focused on the assessment of the fellowships, on the future plans of the fellows as well as on the current situation in their home countries.

Václav Havel Journalism Fellowship was established in 2011, on the basis of a joint initiative of the MFA and RFE/RL with the aim to support young promising journalists from countries of the Eastern Partnership and Russia. Jiří Dienstbier Journalism Fellowship has been running since 2014 and supports journalists from the countries of the Western Balkans. Promotion of independence of the media is one of the priorities of the Transition Promotion Program of the MFA. This year alone, the Ministry has allocated more than CZK 12 million in support of various projects focusing on this important subject.
