Minister Zaorálek at the Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

Date: 30.05.2017 , Venue: Prague

On the occasion of the current Czech Chairmanship in the Council of Europe, the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will take place on May 30, 2017 in Prague, at the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lubomír Zaorálek will present to parliamentarians the program and priorities of the Czech Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which include the protection of human rights of persons belonging to vulnerable or disadvantaged groups, the promotion of gender equality, strengthening the rule of law, or the promotion of human rights education. Minister Zaorálek will also respond to questions raised by foreign parliamentarians.

The Czech Republic took over the six-month chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 19, 2017. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is originally a consultative body of the Council of Europe, composed of individual national parliamentary delegations. There are four plenary meetings of PACE each year in Strasbourg. PACE approves non-binding documents – resolutions, recommendations and opinions. Among the prerogatives of the Assembly is the monitoring of the Member States' commitments, adopted at the time of their accession to the Council of Europe.

The Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly acts on the Assembly’s behalf between its plenary sessions. It is made up of the President and Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, the chairs of the political groups, national delegations and Assembly committees, totalling some 60 parliamentarians from the 47 Council of Europe member states. At the invitation of the respective country, the Standing Committee meets once every six months in the country holding the Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers.
