The Czech Republic Elected as President of One of the Three Principal UN Bodies

Represented by Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the Czech Republic will hold the presidency of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) from July 2017 to July 2018. The decision was made on July 27, 2017 in New York by the ECOSOC Member States. After twenty years, the Czech Republic is thus once again presiding over one of the three principle bodies of the UN system.

The main priority of the Czech Presidency is “Towards sustainable, resilient and inclusive societies through participation of all”. Specifying the priority of the Presidency is not compulsory; however, doing so has become a good practice and also a privilege for the presiding country. Usually, the countries select topics they want to highlight in the UN and contribute to their solution or fulfilment. The Czech emphasis on participation results from both – the long-term national experience of transition as well as enduring Czech foreign policy priorities, especially the support of democracy and human rights.

“In the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Czech Republic can »lead by example« – an example of a deep and complex reform and reconstruction of devastated country and inefficient political system. That’s why we have chosen priority, which according to our opinion was the key aspect of the Czech successful transition. We offer this experience as an inspiration to other countries in the aspect of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”, clarifies the Minister of Foreign Affairs Lubomír Zaorálek.
